My cousin's daughter has been using Nutley as a prop for her role play game. She was being a teacher, reading the book aloud to a 'class' (her grand parents).
This photograph was taken in the moment and it reminded me of how important books are for children, on so many levels. Not only to support their literacy skills, but also their language and communication development, understanding of the world around them and their imagination. I love that Nutley was used for this game. As an Early Years Adviser, I believe books should be included in all the learning areas within a nursery or pre-school. For instance, placing story books about feelings and emotions next to the quiet corner or mirrors will give children new learning opportunities when supported by practitioners. This can also be done at home, for example put books about vehicles in with the small world cars. This increases the opportunities for parents to sit with their child and read together throughout the day.
When getting permission to use the photograph I received an email giving approval to use the image and giving a special review: 'I really enjoyed reading your book, it’s a great book for your young readers. It has lots of life lessons and it’s very real and open.'
Thank you so much Darcey.
