I’ve been adding to the Nutley, An Acorn’s Adventure
story sack. So far to bring the story to life for children, aged between 2 and
4, I have created a tote bag as the ‘story sack itself’. This is a prototype as
the final one is currently being printed. There is a soft toy acorn that a
child can hold whilst the story is being read to them. Two smaller, crocheted
Nutley’s, one green and the other brown illustrate the character getting older
– changing colour and getting bigger. The felt oak leaves can also be given to
children listening to the story to hold. Often early years children need
support to focus for periods of time, like when a story is being read to them.
When they have something to hold, they are more likely to keep their attention
on the story.
Adding to the story sack I would also like to include a
jigsaw showing the life cycle of an oak tree and a factual book about oak
trees. These will be bought soon.
Within an early years setting this story sack could be
used any time of the year but it would be more appropriate to use it in Autumn.
Actual acorns, leaves and seedlings could also be displayed on a Discovery
table to help the children make connections to the real world.
Within the Early Years Foundation Stage, as part of
Understanding the World learning area, children should have knowledge of life
cycles in the natural world. Nutley supports children’s learning in this area
and a story sack will help bring that to life for them.
